It is a dark time for women, and this Cancer New Moon activation represents that darkness so poetically. The New Moon is conjunct Lilith, a mysterious energy representing the true power of women, which is feared by men. Throughout modern times, she has represented the collective urge to cast down, or castrate, that power.

Lilith, also known as the Black Madonna is a symbol that has been feared and demonized throughout the ages. She embodies female freedom, and especially sexual liberty.
Ironically, in Judaic mythology, Lilith is the first woman but her story is often forgotten. She was Adam’s first wife, a hot and fiery female who refused to lie under him. She did not wish to surrender her equality. As the story goes, she was banished from the Garden of Eden as punishment.
Ever since, Lilith has represented the consequences of rejecting the patriarchy – rejection, abandonment, condemnation.
“Her nobles shall be no more, nor shall kings be proclaimed there; all her princes are gone. Her castles shall be overgrown with thorns, her fortresses with thistles and briers. She shall become an abode for jackals and a haunt for ostriches…They shall possess her forever, and dwell there from generation to generation.”
– Isiah, 34
There is an older myth wherein Lilith is not actually banished but rejects Adam. She flies away and goes to live by the sea. God sends three angels who threaten her in an attempt to force her return but she holds strong and refuses. God then makes a new woman from Adam’s rib, rather than from the earth as Adam was born, with the hope that she will be more easily dominated.
In some of older stories, Lilith is the ‘first light’ who was created before Adam. Others say that she was not created by God at all, but arose mysteriously and spontaneously out of the depths of the Great Abyss. As written history only extends back around 5,000 years, we don’t have a clear picture of how Lilith’s story was told before the Egyptians and Judeo-Christians.
In modern versions, Lilith curses all the children of Adam and comes to be seen as a seductress, demon and vampire. She lives in the shadows and steals newborn babies away from their parents – the mythical cause of infant mortality and miscarriages.

Lilith is associated with the energy of the Moon, as well as Pluto, Eris and the sign of Scorpio.
Energetically, she represents a willful power that is feared and suppressed – and that power is being awakened with this New Moon. The struggle to contain Lilith’s independence, and perhaps her knowledge of a primordial truth of equality between men and women, is so viscerally potent now in the collective.
Lilith is feared, misunderstood, rejected and condemned – but what is so dangerous is what she does with her rage. By channeling her scorn into destruction, her inherent power is corrupted.
Fallen from her station as ‘first light’, she has become disfigured, disempowered and demonized. In these modern times, she is lost in the shadow and we cannot fully see her.
This New Moon invokes an awareness of this Black Madonna, the one who has been cast down for centuries, in the sign of the Divine Mother. At the same time, with a powerful stellium of Jupiter, Chiron, Eris and Mars all in Aries, the consciousness of masculinity must meet this dark goddess and respond, perhaps in the only way it knows how. Going forward, we face a profound challenge to reframe their relationship.

The journey of Lilith is in the struggle to realize true power by reclaiming what has been rejected and repressed. But even more so, Lilith represents a struggle with ourselves to step into the empowerment we have denied from within.
Locating Black Moon Lilith in Space
As the Moon’s orbit is elliptical, there is a notable difference between its nearest and furthest points in relation to Earth. The Lunar apogee or furthest point of the Moon’s orbit is the dark void where Lilith is found. From our perspective on earth, the Dark Moon advances forward along the zodiac at about 40° per year. Lilith spends approximately 9 months in each zodiac sign.
